The lifespan of a humidity indicator card is typically 2-5 years, depending on storage conditions, usage frequency, environmental stability, and product type (cobalt-containing or cobalt-free). Under proper storage and use, some high-quality cobalt-free humidity cards can even operate stably for over 5 years.

 

Key Factors Affecting Lifespan

Storage Environment: Humidity indicator cards should be stored in a sealed container in a dry, cool place, avoiding direct sunlight and high temperature and humidity. Original packaging often uses metal cans or vacuum-sealed moisture-proof bags with built-in desiccants. Frequent opening or failure to replace the desiccant will significantly shorten the effective lifespan.

 

Exposure Frequency and Duration: Each opening exposes the card to air, causing hydration of the moisture-sensing material. Frequent or prolonged exposure (e.g., exceeding 30 minutes) accelerates material aging, reducing color sensitivity and accuracy.

 

Color Change Cycles: Although humidity cards support reversible color changes, repeatedly experiencing the "blue → pink → blue" cycle can lead to chemical fatigue. It is generally recommended that the complete color-changing cycle of a single card be limited to 50 times to maintain reading reliability.

 

Contamination and Physical Damage: Hand sweat, grease, dust, or water droplets can contaminate the indicator points, causing localized malfunctions or misjudgments. Physical damage such as folding or scratching can also affect visual judgment; direct contact with sensitive areas should be avoided.

 

Product Type Differences

Cobalt-containing type (cobalt chloride): Low cost, obvious color change, but the EU has classified it as a Group 2 carcinogen (2004/73/EC), prohibiting its use in exported products. Long-term use poses compliance risks.

 

Cobalt-free type: Uses environmentally friendly materials (such as organic dyes or metal complexes), complies with RoHS, REACH, and other environmental standards, offers high safety and better durability, and is recommended as the preferred choice.
